I suggest that you push to get the hardware removed. The fact is that the bones are flexible and the hardware rigid by comparison. I know surgeons often resist the removal surgery because a. its more surgery and b. they don't want to fracture the bone during the removal of the hardware. Especially in the Tibia where the blood supply is so sparse. Nevertheless, if you run a lot, you risk fracturing above or below the hardware in any event. So if you can talk them into removing the hardware, and you take enough time to build you mileage on a gradient, I think you will be best off.

Hi,

I broke my ankle and had a plate and screws put in. I was a runner before off and on before I broke my ankle so, I was surprised when my surgeon told me I could still run. I started running and building up mileage slowing about six months after recovery but, started having problems. First, plantar faciitis so, I got cortizone shots. Second, my feet started aching so, I got inserts. My knee and back sometimes hurt after I run. I feel out of alignment. I asked my primary doctor about ORIF and she agreed.I am curious about other runners results after removing plates and screws.Have any testimonials? I am thinking about removal.
